Yorkshire Champions Have Been Crowned At The Aj Bell 2021 World Triathlon Leeds
The Yorkshire Championships saw 82 local athletes register to compete across swim, bike, run at Roundhay Park in a bid to claim the local crown.
The Yorkshire Championships made its spectacular debut in 2019 at the AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds and returned this weekend with more fantastic racing from local triathlon talent. Competing for the pride of Yorkshire, triathletes from the region took on much of the same course as elite athletes in a bid to win the title of Yorkshire champion.
Racing across the standard distance, athletes embarked on an initial 1.5km swim in Waterloo Lake before transitioning to a 36.2km two-lap cycle and final 10km, three-lap run towards the blue carpet finish in front of Mansion House.
Proud Yorkshireman, Joe Palmer, was representing his home city of Sheffield as he took on the course, saying: “It’s my second triathlon ever. I found it a lot better than my first one, so I’ve learned a lot. I really enjoyed it, great turnout, really slick organisation, the route was brilliant, quite a hilly little route but really good fun, I really enjoyed it.
“I’m a proud Yorkshireman me, born and raised. I’ve never lived outside of Yorkshire, it’s my home, full of good people so I can’t complain. I’ve got my old man here, who’s another Yorkshireman so we’re keeping it in the family.”
Louise Miller also competed alongside Yorkshire locals, saying: “It was really good, I really enjoyed it actually. The atmosphere was better than I thought, there were still quite a lot of people out on the bike course. It’s special really, I’ve done the Yorkshire Championships once before and really enjoyed it. I kind of lost my motivation a little last year with everything being cancelled so, I feel ready to go now.
Andy Salmon, British Triathlon CEO, said: “The Yorkshire Championships are a fantastic celebration of local talent at the AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Leeds. Every year, thousands from the region support the event through participating, cheering from the side line or volunteering on event day, and we are immensely proud to put Yorkshire in the spotlight.
“Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Yorkshire Championships and a well done to the 2021 Yorkshire Champions.”
