Go Tri A New Challenge In Roundhay Park

Having completed Couch to 5k, Chloe Green decided she’d take on the three-in-one challenge of triathlon by entering the beginner-friendly GO TRI event at AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds in 2019 and is heading back in 2021 to take on the sprint distance.

“It was really well organised because all the beginner people were together,” Green said. “We were before [the age group and elite racing], if I’d seen them first I’d have had a heart attack but because we were first I didn’t have them to compare it to.”

As part of the event weekend, the GO TRI event experience is the same as all the races that take place and will see participants cross the same finish line just taking a shorter route to get there.

Taking place on 5 and 6 June 2021, AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Leeds will see participants swim, bike, run in and around Roundhay Park with spaces for the GO TRI, sprint distance and standard distance available to enter here.

“It definitely helped doing the event somewhere I knew,” Green commented. “I’d done a different GO TRI and I didn’t know the area and I didn’t know where I was going, whereas with this, because it was somewhere I know, I knew where I was going.

“On the run I was able to look up and look around me at the park and the scenery around me. When you’re at the top of the hill and you look to the side you can see the water and everything else because you’re above it and when you stand on the pontoon before you get in the water to swim you can see right across the water.”

With her family, Green is a regular user of Roundhay Park to walk her dogs and also goes with her partner and his kids to take part in the Parkrun when it’s on. Now, when she visits the park, she’s able to look out with those memories of her achievement fresh in her mind.

“I like going now that I’ve done it because I can walk up the hill and go ‘I ran up this after I’d been out on my bike and been swimming’,” she added. “I think my partner’s sick of me telling him about the event, I don’t think he wants me to do that anymore.

“I’m doing the sprint this time around because I want to see if I can go further but I wouldn’t have ever signed up for anything like it had I not done the GO TRI one. I’d never have done any outdoor swimming, I’d have stayed in pools.”

All races at AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Leeds will see the routes start and finish in Roundhay Park, culminating in a blue carpet finish outside Mansion House.
